Lesson 3 – #23lessons

Lesson 3 is something that I think a lot of us have a tough time with. Something that we often have to work very hard to notice on a regular basis. This one is something that has continually helped me. Whether it is during tough times or a good day I have found that this mindset really allows for things to be put into perspective.

3. There is Always Something to be Grateful For

In life there are so many things that we forget about or take for granted. If you really think about all the little things you will realize that there are so many miracles happening every second. We can start incredibly small. How about with the brain, the brain holds billions of neurons and each neuron is sending a message throughout your entire body. These tiny electrical pulses are telling your heart to beat, your lungs to draw air in and release it. They are telling your muscles to contract and relax, your eyes to focus, your ears to process the noise around you, and your internal organs to digest food and take in nutrients. All without you having to make any decisions at all! Imagine what it would be like if you had to tell your body to do all those things. Nothing would ever get done!

If the fact that you are simply alive isn’t a miracle, I don’t know what is. Sure, we all have different lives, different challenges and obstacles, different abilities and needs, but if you are reading this you are alive. You woke up this morning and took in a deep breath, and your body kept working. It didn’t stop while you slept. Okay, you’re alive. Now what? Well the sun came up didn’t it? If you went outside today did you feel the sun on your skin? Did you feel the wind? Maybe heard some birds singing in the distance? All those things are amazing.

I wake up and I am grateful. I am grateful that I am alive and I have another day on this earth. I am grateful for this planet, the sun, the moon, the wind, the waves. I’m grateful for the rain that feeds the plants so that I can marvel that the colour of the flowers and the strength of the trees. I am grateful for all the adorable dogs I see walking with their owners and for all the cat videos I see online.

All these things can make even the darkest day a little brighter. Think about it, what are you grateful for?
