Mid-Year Check In – June 2018

I can’t believe it’s already July! How did that happen? It felt like just yesterday it was freezing and snowy here, but instead we’re getting summer heat above 30 degrees (celsius). I also can’t believe that so far, this half year has been my best freading year in probably 5 years. Maybe more. The year has been going by so quickly and it will probably continue to go by really quickly. I’m not prepared!

In all the rush of the year going by I have been doing my best to read what I can, and what is interesting me. I thought it would be fun to do a little check in with how the first half of the year has gone. I will go over what my reading goals were and how they are going, my favourite reads so far, miscellaneous things I’ve been loving, and my reading goals going forward.

Reading Goals

This year I made a goal to read 15 books by the end of the year. My idea was that I would read at least 1 a month. However, since things have changed recently I surpassed my goal! As of right now, I have read 21 books! What a shocker. No seriously. It’s been years since I’ve read more than one book in a whole year. It’s kind of amazing for me.

Count of Category

As for other reading goals, I didn’t really make any to be honest. My only goal was to read one book a month. But, I can talk about what I’ve been reading. So far graphic novels have pretty much taken over my reading. I really got into them and found them super helpful in breaking my slump at the beginning of the year. Being able to finish something pretty quickly really boosted that reading confidence.

Ratings

As for my ratings the majority of the books I’ve been reading are 4.5 stars or 5 stars. Maybe I’m just super liberal with my stars, but I suppose that they way I rank my books means that I have ended up with some pretty good reads. Another reason that most of my reads have been 4.5 or 5 is probably because of all the graphic novels. Reading graphic novel series often leads me to really enjoy each volume and they often get the same rating.

Favourite Reads so Far

2890090

This is going to be a tough choice, because I’ve had a lot of good reads lately. So I will narrow it down to 3 top reads. First would have to be The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch. It’s the third book in the Gentleman Bastard Sequence. If you haven’t heard this series follows Locke Lamora who is an orphan that gets taken into a gang of thieves called the Gentleman Bastards. It is a true fantasy in the sense of it taking place in a far off land, with insane creatures, magic, caste systems built on gangs and corruption. Locke and his gang have to deal with all kinds of crazy and insane, but a lot of it is their own fault, because their profession of choice is con men, thieves, and professional swindlers.

My second choice would have to be the Lumberjanes series. I did a review of the first four volumes here. It is basically a bunch of badass lady-types accidentally falling into quests and adventures in a forest of magic. It’s honestly a really great series. It’s so fun and filled with amazingly diverse characters.

My third favourite read would definitely be Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. I also did a review for this one here. I listened to this one on audiobook and absolutely loved it. It was so sweet and fun and squeal-worthy. Literally, everyone who likes YA contemporary romance, with amazing diversity and adorable guys needs to pick this one up.

Things I’m loving

Alright, the year is half over and I’ve been loving some things that are not really book related. For one, I’ve been into some cool new (to me) music lately. For one I’ve been loving HONNE, a british band that has the most chill, long drives on a late summer night kind of vibes. I stumbled upon them and fell in love. A few of my favourite songs are Good Together, Day 1, All In The Value, and Baby You’re Bad.

I’ve also been loving LANY, an american band, that also has a super chill vibe (notice a theme?) but this vibe is more sunsets on the beach after a day of swimming and eating fruit. Some of my favourite songs by them are Pancakes, Super Far, and ILYSB. Honestly, this has been such a spring/summer vibe lately that I can’t get enough of them.

Last but not least I’ve been loving Queer Eye on Netflix, but then who isn’t? I’ve just enjoyed the episodes so much! Let’s be honest I’ve cried a few times. The Fab 5 are just so sweet and caring and the stories are so heartwarming. I would highly recommend it. Also, I’ve also been learning some tips and tricks in the fashion department.

Goals for the rest of the year

As far as my reading goals for the rest of the year I don’t have any strict ones. My main goal would be to read one “Books Chosen by my DNA” book a month to keep up my schedule. Other than that I want to work through my personal TBR. I have about 20 books I have yet to read on my shelves, as well as 4 that I want to re-read. So, I don’t expect to finish them all, but I am going to hopefully work through it as much as I can.

How has the first half of the year been for you? What have your favourite reads been? What are your goals for the rest of the year?

Sincerely,
Alex
