Lesson 5 – #23lessons

This one is something I think is incredibly important. We often fall into the trap of believe that we are a singular being and that we have no impact on others. That our lives are our own and we can do with it as we see fit. This is true, my life is not the same as yours and we will have completely different paths, however we do not live in our own individual vacuum. We live in a world that requires us to interact with each other regularly. All these tiny moments of interaction may have more meaning than most of us realize.

You have touched more people’s lives than you know

This one is kind of magical in my opinion. Everyone walks the earth paying attention to their own lives, their own struggles, their own memories, but they aren’t paying attention to all the people they pass or interact with on a daily basis are affected by them. It may seem a bit far fetched, but it’s true. That blonde you smiled at on the street yesterday? That smile could have been the only nice thing that happened to them that day. That brunnette you gave directions to could have made it to an important meeting on time because you stopped to help. The blue-eyed beauty you let borrow your pen could be using it to write the most magnificent work they’ve ever created. That lonely looking kid you were friends with in highschool could have found their courage and sense of self because you were friends with them for a year.

There’s an idea, kind of a philosophy, called the butterfly effect which essentially states that when a butterfly flaps its wings it creates a hurricane somewhere on the other side of the world. Of course this is the more philosophical take on a physics/chaos theory idea, but it is the same idea. The theory is basically a way to look at the chaos of life, that every tiny action or event can have a significant effect. What I’m trying to say is that the smallest act of kindness you have ever shown to another human being, creature, or mother earth in general can and probably has had large and significant effects somewhere.

“Our lives are not our own. We are bound to others, past and present, and by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.”

― David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

So, don’t go around thinking you are insignificant and have never done anything good in your life because you have. You have done so many good things. There are so many good things in your life, you just don’t know how much of an impact you have had. You could have saved someone’s life, inspired someone, encouraged someone, brightened someone’s day without even knowing it. Just think of how many people you have touched in your life, and how many people have touched your life.

So be the butterfly and make your smallest actions mean the most.
