My Thoughts
I don’t even know where to start with this one. I had heard about it in a few Booktube videos and had to get it. It sounded amazing. A Dungeons and Dragons based graphic novel sounded incredibly exciting. I picked it up and honestly it was so hilarious. I loved that the Dungeon Master (Griffin McElroy) would pop into the panels and have little discussions with the characters.
I also loved the art of this book. The colours were so vibrant! They were so much fun and everything I wanted out of a fantasy graphic novel. I loved the character design and the art really brought the characters to life. The characters are so funny and unique. Since this is based on the Dungeons and Dragons campaign the McElroy’s play on their podcast the characters are not typical fantasy characters and there are real world referenced weaved throughout the story. It is hilarious! It is ridiculous! And I loved it.
I finished this off and immediately gave it 4.5 stars. But the important part is that this graphic novel is based on a podcast run by the McElroy brothers by the same name, The Adventure Zone. So, I had to listen to it. I couldn’t ignore the beginnings of this graphic novel. I started listening to the podcast and let me tell you, I have never been the type to sit on the bus, earbuds in and be unable to keep from laughing and smiling. The podcast is hilarious and the brothers, plus their dad, are incredibly funny! I had to immediately up the book to 5 stars. It perfectly encapsulates the podcast and the characters and the vibe. While I listened to them play out the story I could see the illustrations of the book and they were perfect. Sure, some things have been changed here and there but the whole idea is the same and it’s fabulous!
If you like podcasts check out their podcast The Adventure Zone or My Brother, My Brother, and Me! If you like graphic novels definitely check this one out.
My rating: 5/5
Heck yes! The Adventure Zone is hilarious and it’s good to hear that the graphic novel doesn’t disappoint 🙂 And the art style looks awesome, too!
