Today I am here to talk about the physical TBR shelf. I have about 30+ books on my personal TBR that I am working through this year. I’m sure you have seen all the videos on Booktube where people predict the books that they will give 5 stars when they get to them. So, here are all the books I own that I think I will love.
God’s Demon by Wayne Barlowe
Goodreads | Fantasy | Horror
“Lucifer’s War, which damned legions of angels to Hell, is an ancient and bitter memory shrouded in the smoke and ash of the Inferno. The Fallen have established a limitless and oppressive kingdom within the fiery confines of Hell. Lucifer has not been seen since the Fall. One Demon Major, however, who has not forgotten his former life in Heaven. He decides to attempt the impossible, to rebel, to endeavor to go Home and bring with him anyone who chooses to follow . . . be they demon or soul. He will stake everything on this chance for redemption.”
This sounds like it will be right up my alley. It is supposed to be dark and gruesome and I am so here for some gruesome. What else could you expect from a book that takes place in hell? This could be such a compelling, dark, and gritty read and I hope that it ends up being as good as the synopsis leads me to believe.
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
Goodreads | Fantasy | Horror
“Carolyn hasn’t had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father’s ancient customs. They’ve studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they’ve wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God. Now, Father is missing—perhaps even dead—and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation.”
There is a trend here, obviously. Dark and creepy? Count me in! I mean it sounds spooky and atmospheric and I have no idea what will happen and I’m excited to find out where this will go.
Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler
Goodreads | Science Fiction | Horror
“This is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly inhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted – and still wants – to destroy her and those she cares for and how she can save herself. Fledgling is a captivating novel that tests the limits of “otherness” and questions what it means to be truly human.”
Of course my trend continues. Some more horror? Of Course! I love vampires and this looks like such a cool and interesting take on the topic. I don’t even know what else to say about this, but vampires and secrets, yes please.
The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood
Goodreads | Fantasy
“Maia and her family raise dragons for the political war machine. As she comes of age, she anticipates a dragon of her own to add to the stable of breeding parents. Her peaceful life is shattered when the Summer Dragon—one of the rare and mythical High Dragons—makes an appearance in her quiet valley. Political factions vie for control of the implied message, threatening her aspirations, her aerie, her entire way of life. In her fight to preserve everything she knows and loves, she exposes a conspiracy, unearths an ancient civilization, and challenges her understanding of her world—and of herself.”
Dragons and dragon riders is all I needed to know to love this. I love dragons and I love the idea of people bonding with their dragons. Dragons, war, conspiracy. Yes.
The Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan
Goodreads | Fantasy
“Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Trading Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from captive or hunted Reds, Greens, Blues and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that bestow fearsome powers on the rare men and women known as the Blood-blessed. But not many know the truth: that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighboring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly.
Claydon Torcreek is a petty thief and an unregistered Blood-blessed who finds himself pressed into service by the Protectorate and sent to wild, uncharted lands in search of a creature he believes is little more than legend. Lizanne Lethridge is a formidable spy and assassin facing gravest danger on an espionage mission deep into the heart of enemy territory. And Corrick Hilemore is the second lieutenant of an Ironship cruiser whose pursuit of ruthless brigands leads him to a far greater threat at the edge of the world.”
It’s another dragon book. Is anyone surprised? Again, dragons are a hard yes for me. I love them all. Taking dragon blood and using it to make elixirs and power? So interesting. Dragons are dying, but there may be an even better breed? Yes. A thief, assassin, and military man in this world? Also, hard yes. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
Have you heard of any of these? Any you think I will love/hate the most?
