I’m sure if you know me or have been reading some of my posts you will have noticed that I’ve been pretty into a particular game, well more acurrately podcasts about a certain game. Well, I actually got to play with some of the best people and here was my experience.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about I will explain. Over the last year and a bit I have gotten very into listening to real-play Dungeons and Dragons podcasts. I’m sure you’ve heard of Dungeons and Dragons, but if you haven’t it’s basically a tabletop role-playing game where dice determine what you can and can’t do, as well as your success.
I will say that I am very lucky to live in a place where there are some incredibly nerdy cafes, restaurants, and bars and I was able to find a place that had this great service availalble. They have DM’s (Dungeon Masters) who will run a 4 hour session and you also get a meal. So I begged and bribed (not really) some of my favourite people to come with me on this adventure to celebrate my birthday. Let’s be real, I would have done it at any time in the year, but I thought using my birthday as an excuse was a great plan.
We basically started out by getting a bit of an explanation of how the game works and what we will be doing. From there we chose our characters and named them (which is probably the hardest part) and then we got into the game. It was a heist scenario and though I’m sure we could have been more organized the absolute chaos we created was hilarious and incredibly enjoyable.
It was an amazing experience overall. I didn’t even realize it when we had come to the end of our 4 hours. We didn’t have to worry about knowing all the rules or how everything worked. It was very much about the experience and the roleplaying involved in playing the game. My friends and I genuinely enjoyed it.
We were able to be funny and make crazy decisions and just have fun. I laughed so hard and we all got to try new things and do something different. My goal for inviting my friends was that they would, hopefully, enjoy it enough that we could learn how to play it and play as a group. I was very happy to find that they did want to play again!
I’m am very excited to start my journey of learning how to DM and playing with my friends in the future!
Have you ever heard of or played D&D before?
Keep having fun!
